  • What is a class action?

A class action is a lawsuit in which one or a few named plaintiffs represent a larger group of people who were harmed in the same way by the same defendant. It lets victims pool their claims together, which is often the only practical way to challenge widespread but individually modest harms such as consumer fraud, wage theft, or data breaches.

  • Do I have to pay anything to join a class action?

No. Class actions are almost always handled on a contingency-fee basis, with the lawyers paid only out of a recovery — subject to court approval. There are no upfront costs or hourly fees to class members. If there is no recovery, you owe nothing.

  • How is a class action different from a mass tort or an individual lawsuit?

A class action treats the group's claims as one case for issues that are common to everyone, with damages distributed by a court-approved formula. A mass tort is many individual lawsuits coordinated together with damages decided case-by-case. An individual lawsuit only covers you. The right structure depends on how similar each victim's harm is.

  • How long do class actions usually take?

Class actions generally take longer than individual cases — often two to five years — because the court must certify the class, discovery is extensive, and defendants frequently challenge certification on appeal. Settlements also require court approval and notice to class members, which adds time but protects everyone in the class.

  • Will I have to appear in court or be deposed?

Typically only the named class representatives are deposed and may have to testify. Other class members usually just receive notice of the case and the eventual settlement or judgment, with instructions for how to claim their share. We make sure named plaintiffs are fully prepared at every step.
